westwood

i took these photos in westwood in 2019. most of these are apartment buildings in the neighborhood around UCLA. i was particularly obsessed with all the dingbats that have survived in the neighborhood, and wanted to document my favorites.

a dingbat is a small apartment building (generally no more than three stories) with street-level parking tucked beneath. they became extremely popular among developers in mid-century los angeles, who often dressed up the cheap boxy facades with flashy signs and spacey decor. the latter gave the dingbats their name, after the typographical ornaments. the combo of cheap materials, boxy design and kitsch have made dingbats the target of a lot of criticism over the years, much like five-over-ones today. but as they've fallen out of fashion, aged, and gradually started to disappear, dingbats have become icons of mid-century LA.

unfortunately dingbats were never really built to last and, especially in a university neighborhood like westwood, newer and far bigger apartment buildings are starting to replace them. the dingbats below are living on borrowed time—if they're even still alive.

( ok, take me home. )

Ophir Terrace (i used to live here)

Courtyard apts, probably from the 40s

I like this ugly blank facade and row of garages

Dingbat with some additional levels stacked up the hill

Lots of duplexes with funny little stairs like this

I think the roofs of these carports are decks for houses set further back

Robison Hall, designed by Richard Neutra in 1937
(allegedly Jim Morrison lived here)

Hardman-Hansen Hall, part of the University Coop Housing Association

Dingbat built c.1950, love the blue ribbon and font choice

Tom Bradley International Hall, designed by Ricardo Legorreta in 1998

"The Treehouse," designed by John Lautner in 1949
(allegedly Jim Morrison lived here)

New apartment building by Lorcan O'Herlihy Architects c.2015

Really love the metal cladding and colors

Dingbat built c.1952, great font choice and funky banister

My favorite dingbat in the neighborhood, built c.1954. Adore the staggered overhang

Iconic Fox Bruin, built in 1937 and seen in Tarantino's "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood"

The even more iconic Fox Westwood Village, built in 1931
